With no accompanying text, it is hard to discern what Leigh intended with this unusual piece.  The young student in the recording above decided to approximate the sound of the sand by rubbing the underside of the piano keyboard.  It is not impossible that Leigh wanted to include extended piano techniques in her primer, using the whole body and the whole instrument in her teaching.  We currently looking into whether or not this was a trend in piano primers of the time.
